Employee Spotlight: Q&A with Luke Kelly, our Full Stack Developer

Keeper Solutions has been expanding rapidly over the past 12 months. Our team has almost doubled in size to over 80. We’ve made some key hires from our delivery centres in Costa Rica, Serbia, Romania, Croatia, and Ireland to support our growing portfolio of international customers in Europe and the United States.

Someone who joined our team as an intern and since graduating from university is Keeper Solutions’ Full Stack Developer, Luke Kelly. Luke is a University of Limerick, Mobile Communication and Security, graduate. He is a Limerick native and all-around tech wiz, working alongside our international teams of developers.

We caught up with Luke to find out a little bit more about his career to date from intern to now being a full-time member of the team. We also discussed his passions, and what projects excite him most.

Can you tell us about your journey with Keeper Solutions so far?

I started with Keeper Solutions in January of 2019 as an intern. I was fortunate to have this opportunity in my third year of college as part of a co-op programme at the University of Limerick, where I was studying Mobile Communication and Security. Keeper Solutions hired me as an intern in the Varazdin office in Croatia. I also had the opportunity to work in the Zagreb office, which was a memorable office, as it was located on the 23rd floor, and was higher than most of the buildings I’ve been in.

Following my internship in Varazdin, I completed my college degree and was very grateful to Stephen and the Keeper team who hired me after leaving college. Today, I am working on Keeper Solutions’ first IP, the ‘VR Room’ project.

Can you tell us a little bit about what it’s like to work in Croatia?

Being born and raised in Ireland, the first thing I have to point out is the weather. It snows in winter and it’s sunny in summer. One of my favourite things to do in Varazdin was to go ice-skating every evening. The city had converted a local park, which was located beside a castle into a skating rink.

The other big difference for me was the language. Trying to learn “good day” (dobar dan) and “how are you?” (kako si ti) took way longer than it should have. Thankfully the Varazdin team was there to help with the pronunciation. They also taught me some other words and phrases that came in handy. They even bought me a T-shirt with one of our favourite phrases.

What are you enjoying about your role at Keeper Solutions?

Honestly, the trust. Even though I’m just out of college, the company trusts me to do my work, and that if I have a problem I can bring it to my project manager or someone senior in the company, and they will help me. We have some very talented senior engineers and so far they have solved every problem I’ve brought them. It’s very reassuring to be trusted but to know that should I need senior support it’s there, and that it’s so good.

Outside of work what are you passionate about?

I enjoy many things. I enjoy swimming, photography, travel, sports, and engineering. I try to go swimming 3-4 times a week for fitness, and because I enjoy it. Also, I enjoy taking photos, my most popular subject is my three brothers and their respective sports games, but nature, landscapes, and the annual family photo are common shots.

What type of project excites you the most?

Despite working in the world of software, I do love a good Lego build 🙂

What motivates you?

I love a good puzzle, which is why I love coding. It’s frustrating, but when it works you feel great. I’m driven to be the best version of me that I can be.

What technology trends do you find most interesting right now?

Travel is a passion of mine. I am fascinated by what’s happening in the space travel industry. I am also interested in the different ways people are trying to solve the problems closer to home, production of clean energy, cleaning of the environment, and how technology is used to create these projects.

It all fascinates me!

A huge thank you to Luke, who also supplied some incredible photos!
